21.1 A teacher may request, and will be granted, a
leave of absence for up to two (2) school years without pay for the
purpose of childrearing immediately following the birth (after the completion
of maternity leave) or for the purpose of adoption of a child after
proper notification that a child is available.
21.2 Only one (1) member of the bargaining unit in
a household shall receive a childrearing leave for any one (1) period
of time.
21.3 The Board shall receive a written request by such
teacher at least forty (40) days prior to the onset of such leave.
21.4 The teacher shall be given the opportunity to
continue insurance coverage in the school insurance program at his/her
own expense, paying one hundred percent (100%) of the cost.
21.5 The teacher shall have the option of returning
from leave at the start of the school year immediately following the
school year in which leave commenced or at the start of the school year
subsequent to that.
21.6 Confirmation of the intent to return from leave
shall be given, in writing, to the Board on or before March 15 prior
to the fall term for which the teacher plans to return. Failure to notify,
in writing, according to these stipulated time lines shall be deemed
a resignation, and the obligation of the school system will cease. If
such leave is taken after March 15, and the teacher plans to return
the fall immediately following, written notice shall be provided no
later than June 30.
21.7 The Board will place any teacher, who duly requests
to return from leave, in a teaching position for which such teacher
is certified and qualified; provided, however, any provisions concerning
reduction in force will apply to such teacher on leave. Such professional
staff member shall be placed in a teaching position prior to any new
teacher being offered a contract.
