GEA MEMBERSHIP INFO

Welcome to Glastonbury Public Schools. As the superintendent informed you when you signed your contract, the Glastonbury Education Association (GEA) becomes your representative in the workplace. The GEA is the local, self-governing body of Glastonbury teachers, K-12.

As a member of the GEA, you also become part of the Connecticut Education Association (CEA) and the National Education Association (NEA). We invite you to join the GEA.

Since we are the guarantor of your contractual rights and professional status, state law requires that you become a member of the Association or pay the Association a service fee. If you do not join the union (or don’t return the registration form), you will automatically become an Agency Fee payer, which does not provide you with participatory rights in all union functions. Below are listed your options for the coming year.

NEA Type: Active Professional FT
CEA Type: Active Certified F/T
NEA dues amount: $153.00

Local dues amount: $83.00
Total dues amount: $694.00
Per paycheck deduction: $34.70

In the next few days, you should receive a Membership Booklet for new union members from your building reps. The Association Membership Form is located in the pocket at the back of this booklet. If you intend to join the GEA, please take the time now to complete the registration form, using the following codes:

Once you have completed the Association Membership Form, forward it to Stephanie Heizman, GEA Membership Co-Chair, at Nayaug via interoffice mail so that your dues deduction can be processed. Please understand that your union dues are retroactive and your initial dues deduction can add up if you do not return your Association Membership Form quickly.

Upon completing the Association Membership Form, you are eligible to participate in all union functions (i.e. elections, meetings). However, you are also eligible to receive discounts, benefits, and services ranging from discounted magazine subscriptions, car rentals, and admission fees at local attractions to financial and insurance products specifically designed for professionals working in the field of education. Check out your Association Membership Booklet as well as www.cea.org and www.nea.org for more details. Please note that one of those benefits is a basic, but free life insurance policy called Dues-Tab. To denote your beneficiary tear off the last page of the Association Membership Form and mail it back to the CEA. You will receive a membership card once CEA has processed your application.

If you have not received your new membership booklet, have any questions about how to complete the registration form, or want to know more about the benefits of union membership, please don’t hesitate to contact either Jennifer Shaknaitis or Stephanie Heizman.

We wish you the best of luck.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Heizman (Nayaug)
GEA Membership Chair
