Some memorable quotes from her speech are: “Teaching is all about other people. It is about your students, their families, your colleagues, your school and community.”
“Teaching is about the support, the solidarity and generosity of staff. These are the people who enable us to get through the day and do what we do best.”
“A true teacher does not have defining moments: her contributions are constant and evident in the classroom.”
“I believe that once I gain the students trust in helping them feel safe, appreciated and grounded, while recognizing their challenges and strengths then learning becomes natural. When I reflect on the teaching moment, I know that the moment can last a lifetime.”
CONGRATULATIONS TO Reenie Demkiw FOR THE WELLER AWARD FOR 2007
This "Animal Poems" project was done with the fifth grade students in the media center. The students researched an animal and then learned how to use a rhyming dictionary. Doug Florian, an award winning poet, did a poetry workshop for the students to get them excited about writing poetry. The students wrote and editied their poems for internal rhymes using some animal facts that they had learned. Afterwards they typed these and drew several drafts to go around their poem. The final art picture was then drwn to go along with the poem. At the back of each class' poems, the students wrote a short autobiograpy to go along with their picture. The completed poetry books were displayed at the National Arts Club in New York City before they were sent to Kenyan refugee camps through the program Kids to Kids International. The students also sent donated drawing supplies for the Kenyan children. |
