When you retire, you are no longer a member of a local education association or a bargaining unit. When you retire, you only retire from your teaching position, not from your continued interest in the teaching profession. You also don't walk away from the many friendships you developed over your career. How can you stay connected and involved? Who will be there to look out for your pensions and benefits? That's where CEA-Retired comes in. We seek to address the interests and needs of the growing number of retired professional educators in Connecticut. Membership in CEA-Retired provides you the opportunity to continue relationships with your colleagues,local associations, and CEA. CEA-Retired is the only Connecticut organization for retired education professionals officially affiliated with CEA and NEA.

Lobbying for your continued benefits
State retirement laws determine the retirement allotments and benefits retired educators receive. The only way there can be a change in retirement is by the introduction of new, or modification of, existing legislation. CEA-Retired works hand-in-hand with CEA and in conjunction with the Connecticut Teachers' Retirement Board (STRB) to preserve, protect, and improve retirement pensions and benefits. CEA-Retired lobbies to maintain and improve retirement and health benefits for all public school employees. CEA-Retired works to:

Safeguard benefits by getting CEA-Retired members involved in grass-roots lobbying groups.
Propose and lobby for STRB benefit improvements.
Keep members informed of political and lobbying efforts.
Interview, evaluate, and recommend candidates running for political office by working with CEA Government Relations to carefully appraise candidates' positions on retirement issues.
Provide a great setting for retired members to see old friends and make new ones, while keeping abreast of what's happening in public education.

Continuation of Professional Educator Certificate
As a retired educator, you can maintain your state certification. A special form, titled "Application for Continuation of Professional Educator Certificate" is available on the State Department of Education Website, www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/PDF/Cert/certform/ed_179.pdf ,or by contacting the Department of Education:

CEA Retired Governance
Four elected officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer) and 16 CEA-Retired members (along with eight alternates) comprise the CEA-Retired Advisory Council. Many members serve on CEA-Retired committees such as Constitution, Finance, Legislative, Newsetter/Communications, Membership, Planning, Member Benefits/Special Services, and others appointed from time to time. In addition, CEA-Retired members serve on many CEA committees and commissions.

Professional administrative and staff support to the CEA-Retired Advisory Council, CEA-Retired committees, and general retired membership is provided through the CEA Affiliate Services Department.

CEA and NEA Affiliate Governance
Every three years CEA-Retired members elect its four principal officers. The President and Vice-President also are elected to serve as members of the CEA Board of Directors. Members of the Advisory Council are elected each year at the Annual Meeting in staggering terms. An alternate is elected each year at the Spring Annual Meeting.

Members annually elect voting delegates to the CEA Representative Assembly. Notices of these elections appear in the CEA Advisor sent to CEA’s 41,000+ members and ballots are mailed by first-class mail to all CEA-Retired members. Elections are conducted by the CEA Elections Committee.

CEA-Retired members annually elect voting delegates to represent them at the NEA Representative Assembly (RA) and the NEA-Retired Annual Meeting. Again, notices of these elections appear in the CEA Advisor with ballots also appearing in that publication.
