Luanelly Iglesias LUANELLY IGLESIAS

Luanelly Iglesias has taught in the bilingual program at North End Middle School in Waterbury since 2003. Born and raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Luanelly moved to the United States at eighteen and began working in a factory to contribute to her family's income. However, realizing that education would open many more doors for her, Luanelly went to and graduated from college, then obtained a master's degree, and began her career as an educator. Read More



Stu Abrams STUART ABRAMS

Stuart (Stu) Abrams, a social studies teacher at Avon High School since the mid-1990s, has taught health, United States history, world history, and sociology courses. But throughout his career, Stu has emerged as an outstanding educator in the area of humanities and genocide education. The various humanities electives Stu offers share a common goal of ensuring that his students become more knowledgeable about the world in which they live and sensitive to human rights and social justice issues. Eric Martone ERIC MARTONE

Eric Martone has taught social studies at Kennedy Hugh School in Waterbury since 2004. In addition, he teaches graduate-level courses and is completing his doctorate in global history. However, his primary area of interest and research has been African American history that has allowed him to enrich his colleagues' and students' appreciation and understanding of African Americans and how Western societies have dealt historically with cultural diversity. Martha Hardisty MARTHA HARDISTY

Martha Hardisty has been the district health teacher for Ashford School in Ashford for more than twenty-five years. In 1991, she developed WINGS, a program that touches on many aspects of human and civil rights in the context of child development such as supporting self-esteem, promoting respect for individuality, and the importance of standing up to bullying.
