As the number of drivers on U.S. roadways continues to increase, the risks associated with higher motor vehicle use have also risen.

In 2015, miles driven by automobiles logged the largest annual increase in 25 years—a trend that has continued, as the number of drivers on Memorial Day 2017 alone rose by 2.4% over the previous year.

Even as our cars become safer, more drivers and higher mileage—combined with reckless and distracted driving—have made our roads more dangerous. Recent data suggests that 2016 may have been the deadliest year on U.S. roads in nearly ten years.
