CEF Golf Tournament, July 14, 2008. Glastonbury Hills

CEF Golf Brochure

ATTENTION ALL GOLFERS! You can make a difference in a child’s life just by playing golf! Mark your calendar for July 14, 2008 to participate in the Connecticut Education Foundation’s 14th annual Hand’s Across the Green Golf Tournament to benefit The Children’s Fund (CEF). Your support is vital in CEF’s efforts to help children who find themselves in unmanageable and precarious situations.  This year CEF is again presenting the double shotgun play format with a morning starting tee time of 7:30 a.m. at $150 a player, and the afternoon time of 12:30p.m. at $175 a player. We encourage you to take advantage of the reduced cost for the morning shotgun. The afternoon shotgun will be limited to 144 players and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis without exceptions. Please download the brochure for complete information.

Do your BEST video on DVD this year!
If you're submitting a portfolio for the first time in May 2008, you now have the option to submit the video on a DVD. Read and print the SDE guidelines for video submission on a DVD.

Organ Donor Needed
Bette DeFossesCEA member Bette DeFosses, a Wolcott teacher, needs a new kidney, and she is appealing to her colleagues for help. DeFosses, a school psychologist, has polycystic kidney disease, which causes fluid-filled cysts to grow on the kidneys. Over time, these cysts multiply and grow, and in 50 percent of cases cause kidney failure. At present, Bette's kidney function is at 23 percent, and she says when it gets to 15 percent then dialysis will be necessary. Bette told the CEA Advisor newspaper, "You hear about people helping one another by being an organ donor. Now I'm hoping someone will help me." Bette can be reached at bettedefosses@yahoo.com. The CEA Advisor newspaper has featured stories about teachers being donors.

All CEA members are covered by the NEA Dues-Tab® Program which provides up to $1000 term life insurance for Eligible Members, however not all members have registered an appropriate beneficiary. Often a member registers a beneficiary when they join the Association, but never changes it after getting married, divorced or having children. Update your beneficiary information now!

Attractive Investment Option for Teachers
The CEA Board of Directors is encouraging members to learn more about a new, in fact never before available, state of Connecticut investment program. The new program is called the State of Connecticut Deferred Compensation 457 Plan (CTdcp457). Under the Internal Revenue Code, a 457 investment is distinctly different from a 403(b) investment, and specific regulations and requirements apply to both teachers and their school districts for each investment program.
